Why large dog crates matter

A crate for a large dog isn’t just a scaled-up version of a small one. Big dogs need more than space – they need a solid, safe structure with strong locks and durable materials, ideally with reinforced steel doors. Choosing the right crate gives your dog a private space to relax and helps them feel calm and secure at home.

What is a dog crate?

A crate (or home kennel) is your dog’s personal retreat – a quiet, secure spot where they can rest, nap, and feel safe. Inside, your dog should be able to move around comfortably: enter easily, stand, turn, and stretch out to sleep.

Since it’s meant for relaxation, it’s best not to encourage active play inside. Instead, build positive associations by adding treats, chews, a Kong, or favorite toys. A cozy mattress and a clean interior make the crate inviting and comfortable.

Some crates with handles can also double as travel carriers. Many owners even use two:

  • a stylish, furniture-style crate for home use,
  • and a foldable wire crate for safe transport in the car.

Still, the main purpose of a crate is to provide a safe, stationary “den” at home. To make it work, proper crate training is essential.

XL or XXL crate – what size do you need?

Every dog is different, so the best way to choose is by measuring your dog before buying.

  • Length: Measure from nose to tail base and add 30–40 cm. This ensures your dog can stretch out.
  • Height: Measure from the floor to the top of the head and add 10–15 cm. Your dog should enter without lowering its head – especially important for seniors or dogs with joint issues.
  • Depth: Have your dog lie on its side with legs stretched out. That measurement will be your crate’s depth. For short-legged breeds, add a few extra centimeters.

Common crate sizes for large dogs:

  • XL – 115 × 74 × 82 cm (internal dimensions)
  • XXL – 133 × 83 × 92 cm (internal dimensions)

XXL works well for giant breeds like the Saint Bernard, English Mastiff, or Landseer.
XL is usually enough for German Shepherds, Labradors, Rottweilers, or Amstaffs.

Safe and stylish options

Many owners today look for crates that blend into their home. A popular choice is a metal crate with a wooden top that doubles as furniture – sometimes even a TV stand or a cabinet with drawers for dog accessories. Inside, there’s space for a mattress, toys, and a water bowl.

This kind of crate provides:

  • comfort and security for your dog,
  • a stylish, functional piece of furniture for you,
  • and a den-like environment that helps your dog feel calm while staying close to the family.

Crates for puppies

If you’re crate training a puppy, choose a crate slightly bigger than their current size. A full adult-sized crate may feel overwhelming and discourage them from using it. You can always upgrade as they grow.

Summary

Finding the right crate for a large dog isn’t complicated – but size and safety matter. The best crate allows your dog to:

  • enter without lowering their head,
  • stand, turn, and lie down comfortably,
  • rest in a secure, quiet spot.

Look for stable construction with no sharp edges or rattling noises (common in wire crates), and add an orthopedic mattress for comfort. Provide water and safe chews to make the crate a positive place.

For massive dogs, opt for strong steel-bar crates with reliable locks. And remember: a crate should never be used as punishment. Introduce it gradually, with patience and consistency.

If you’re unsure about sizing, check with the manufacturer before buying. For dogs with behavioral challenges, consult a trainer or behaviorist for support.

With the right choice and proper training, a crate becomes much more than just a kennel – it’s your dog’s safe, cozy retreat.
